Drake, Lil Wayne Rock BET Awards

Pair tear through 'Best I Ever Had' and 'Every Girl in the World.'

By Jayson Rodriguez

LOS ANGELES — It's hard to disagree with Jamie Foxx when he calls Drake the rookie of the year.

The host of Sunday's 2009 BET Awards bestowed the distinct honor upon the upstart MC when he introduced Drake, one of the last performers of the night. The pair, Foxx and Drake, had performed together just weeks ago on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien.

Drake might have had to perform sitting, but he didn't disappoint. He launched into his breakout hit, "Best I Ever Had," sporting a burgundy cardigan, jeans and an all-around casual look. But the rapper was restricted to sitting on a stool for his performance as he recently suffered a knee injury, reportedly a torn ACL.

The crowd, however, rose to their feet for the Toronto-based star.

After one quick verse, Drake then introduced his lyrical mentor Lil Wayne and the Young Money crew. The collective kicked things off with their new anthem, "Every Girl in the World." The young rappers onstage, Drizzy, Gudda Gudda, and Mack Maine, then gave way for Cash Money head Baby as he and Weezy performed their new track, "Always Strapped."

Drake is as yet unsigned, but the much-hyped rapper is expected to announce which record label he's joining very soon.

In the interim, he's worked with Mary J. Blige and he's rumored to be appearing on Jay-Z's not-yet-titled forthcoming single from The Blueprint 3.

"The Mary thing was set up as a single," he told MTV News earlier this month. "The Jay thing, I don't now how official that is. I just read that on the Internet. But it's cool. I'm glad the work I'm doing is something that people are even considering putting out as a single. 'Cause singles, you have to be confident in those songs when you're talking about singles. It's great. I'm glad that I'm delivering for people."

Drake x Mixtape Daily Interview, Talks Jay-Z & Lil Wayne

Here's another in a continuing series of MTV interviews with Drake. And this time, instead of the usual annoying commercial at the beginning we get a lil a Transformers action...sweet!

Drake Speaks On Lil Wayne's Guidance

VIA: SOHH.COM

Young Money's Drake recently spoke on having Lil Wayne as his boss and what advantages he has gained from the self-proclaimed "Greatest Rapper Alive."

After recently praising Kanye West for his motivation, Drake has now shared his thoughts on Weezy.

"Wayne is another one that...rap-wise, verse-wise...was my favorite," Drake said in an interview. "And to be under his wing, to be able to interact with him on a daily basis and talk to him and get information from him, I'm in a blessed position. I have the greatest mentors, the greatest teachers in the world. They all have gradually started to embrace me more and more, so it's a great feeling." (MTV)

Both emcees were recently confirmed for a summer tour beginning this July.

We have learned that as of right now it is only Lil Wayne and Drake on the tour, no word on Jay-Z and Young Jeezy who were rumored to be joining as well. We also learned that the tour will begin in July this summer. No dates and venues have been announced but we can expect those soon. This information has been confirmed by Wayne's manager Cortez Bryant. We will be keeping you up-to-date on any news regarding the tour, as well as posting dates as they become available. Keep checking back. (New Lil Wayne)

Drake recently said a tour featuring a couple extra hip-hop heavyweights would likely also take place this summer.

"God willing, if everything goes according to plan and everybody's schedule is in place, then I will be on tour with some amazing people," Drake said in an interview. "One of them being Jay-Z, one of them being Lil Wayne, one of them being Young Jeezy and one of them being me." (Much Music)

He is reportedly prepping his new album beginning today (June 1).

The sold-out Ne York performance was Drake's last stop before he enters the studio for his debut, Thank Me Later, which he will start working on June 1, Drake told Billboard.com last week. And although he wouldn't confirm which major label will release the album, he did say he will be signing to one soon. "So Far Gone" was released on February via his blog site Octobersveryown.com. Fire Starter: Bound To Blow

Damn rightit's Drake. We had to have Drizzy relaunch Fire Starter — the Canadian is bakin'. He's a walking craze, and his acclaim is only getting bigger.

You gotta love how it's happening organically too. No label is force-feeding him down our throats — he's not even signed to a major yet (although that could change at any moment). The Young Money soldier is paving his own way with great music and word of mouth. He just might have leap-frogged most of his peers who have been hyped longer and stronger than he has.

Drake had a good buzz going for himself after he dropped the mixtape So Far Gone back in February. But then the "Degrassi: The Next Generation" star-turned-Young Money MC took it up a notch (or three) by taking New York by storm last month. He popped up seemingly everywhere, from radio interviews with all the big-dog DJs to live shows throughout the city.

A recent video of the Canadian rapper on Funkmaster Flex's Hot 97 program shows Drake reading rhymes from his BlackBerry during a live freestyle. Commenters on Cipha Sound's YouTube page where the video first popped up, cried foul, calling Drizzy a fraud for spitting verses from his phone. But the lyricist told Mixtape Daily he's a proud writer and that more rappers should think about putting their words together more carefully.

"It shouldn't be your tagline: 'I don't even write.' Well, if it's not quality product, who cares? We can tell," Drake said. "Maybe if you took the time to write, your sh-- would be a little better. ... Sometimes I feel like people almost pride themselves on [not writing] and kind of look at me funny when I pull my phone out and start writing, like, 'You write? What?' But to each their own. You gotta do what works for you. It's a creative process. ... I'll pull my phone out in front of anybody and start writing. And say, 'Yo, I gotta go and check this Web site [for research],' because I know when I come with that verse, you're gonna be like, 'Oh, OK, that's why it took two hours and you needed the wireless Internet hooked up.' It's just about quality and taking pride in yourself and having an ear. A lot of artists don't even know when they sound wrong or off. They're like, 'Yeah, that sounds the same as that hit I have on the radio.' If you don't know when something is wrong, you're not gonna be one of the greats. Might be cool for a minute, but ... "

Drake is still basking in the snowballing success of So Far Gone, touring and getting calls from people such as Queen Latifah and Cool & Dre for collaborations. His debut, Thank Me Later, is still in the cooker, but before any official singles drop, Drizzy has a few treats in store for his growing fanbase. Expect some big-name collabos to hit the Net soon.

"Me and Kid Cudi were  talking at the [mtvU] Spring Break, just about so many people asking me 'When's that Cudi record coming? You and Cudi?' Me and Cudi gonna make it work," Drake promised. "Other than that, I got a song with 'Ye and Wayne. I got a song: me, Wayne and Jeezy. I got some stuff coming to just keep the people entertained until that album hits the shelves, and hopefully my work on So Far Gone will allow me to at least break into the industry in an impressive way." However, Drake declined to provide details on his forthcoming collaborations.
